Future Ecologies 6.1 - Forests
I would #recommend this as a first FE episode to anyone interested in Ecology.
- Disturbance should mimic nature. Have you ever seen a straight line in nature? Do not cut clean; be messy.
- Death is not so sad in ecology. The deaths of trees pave the way: for fertile soil (pushing tree over with roots intact), new plant growth through sunlight (cutting any tree in a thick canopy), birds nesting (tree killed by bark stripping), and a myriad of other species and diversity.
- Nature's regeneration is not always glacial. Just because trees grow slowly for us, doesn't mean all regrowth does. Birds can move in within days or weeks of trees being felled in the right way.
- Relationships to place is essential to get humans to work on the time scale of ecological restoration, which is centuries. Getting people to live, farm, celebrate and explore in a place is essential.
