Research shows that habits which stick are more likely to have a reward. Rewards are either intrinsic (from within; the habit itself feels rewarding) or extrinsic (from without; a smoothie, chocolate, coffee, talking to a friend). For ADHD brains, intrinsic rewards don't seem to come as easily, and so they benefit from having extrinsic rewards to form habits.
