Questions for natural farmers

The stuff I want to learn about farms I visit or that pique my interest. As a starting point, I want to understand how they use and deviate from Fukuoka's philosophy and techniques.

  1. Where would you say Fukuoka has influenced you the most? What are your other influences?
  2. Where do you deviate from Fukuoka's principles and methods and why?
    1. Have you considered using living mulch in the fields?
    2. What about poly-cropping/companion planting?
    3. Do you believe that Fukuoka's energy efficiencies are possible? This is about 3 calories out for 1 calorie in. To calculate this for your farm, you need to know the mass of edible vegetation from a field (ie kg of rice for one harvest), the amount of human hours spent on a particular field plus the amount of gasoline (in calories) or electrical energy (in watts) used.
  3. How do your rice yields fare from year to year? For reference, Fukuoka's typical yields were 2340kg/acre (or 578g/m^2), and peak yields were 3084kg/acre.
    1. They don't measure, they just guess. what is the guess?
  4. Machines vs hand tools. Why do you use machine tools instead of hand tools and in what situations are they worth it? Is it for time, cost-efficiency, mottainai for secondhand machines?
  5. What are the main financial outputs of the farm? Is it monetarily self-sufficient and did it take a while to get there?
